“The pandemic has revealed the poverty of our economic theory. Rupture with the old paradigm is the only route to recovery.”

I wrote an article on how COVID-19 exposes weaknesses in the dominant Economics narrative, and how heterodox economics offer important alternatives, with Carolina Alves for the Review of Agrarian Studies. Here’s the abstract:
In this arÂtiÂcle, we argue that soÂciÂeties’ unÂpreÂparedÂness and inÂadÂeÂquate reÂsponses to the Covid-19 panÂdemic exÂpose weakÂnesses in the founÂdaÂtions of the domÂiÂnant ecoÂnomic parÂaÂdigm. We docÂuÂment how ecoÂnomÂics came to disÂemÂbed itÂself from broader soÂciÂetal analyÂsis and how this has inÂfluÂenced pubÂlic polÂicy in probÂlemÂatic ways, leadÂing to privÂiÂlegÂing of efÂfiÂciency over reÂsilience. We then go a step furÂther to conÂsider the role of ecoÂnomic evÂiÂdence in pubÂlic polÂicy more genÂerÂally. FurÂtherÂmore, we demonÂstrate how hetÂeroÂdox ecoÂnomÂics can enÂrich our unÂderÂstandÂings of our economies’ weakÂnesses and of how to build a more reÂsilient and just econÂomy. We conÂclude that we need an exÂplaÂnaÂtion of the criÂsis that is caÂpaÂble of seeÂing the econÂomy as more than just marÂkets and as emÂbedÂded in soÂciÂety; one that is caÂpaÂble of linkÂing the causes and conÂseÂquences of the panÂdemic to our sysÂtems of proÂducÂtion and disÂtriÂbÂuÂtion.

I wrote a post for openDemocracy laying out how a dependency theory research programme can help us understand the global impacts of COVID-19. Check it out.
